Tamil Film "Pichaikaran" 2016 The Tamil film Pichaikaran is directed by veteran Mani Ratnam and stars Vikram, Keerthy Suresh, Karthi. A young boy with mental disabilities has a pet elephant named Gajendra which will be passed down to his son when he is older. However when the boy gets captured in the wilds of India, his father must go on an epic quest to save him with help from Gajendra's owner - who happens to be a washed up old hunter.The film depicts the trials and tribulations of this common Indian story in a fictional setting. The film is made under the banner of Sri Thenandal Films. It was initially budgeted to be produced in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu, but was later dubbed into Malayalam before its release. The film was released on 15 February 2016 in more than 100 screens worldwide. The film was released in America on 29 June 2016 on the eve of "Karthikai Arudra" celebrations at Manhattan, New York City. US premiere of the film took place on 28 June 2016 at CCBC Cinemas in Brooklyn Heights. The soundtrack for this movie has been composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy along with lyrics by Thamarai Damodaran. The satellite rights of the film were sold to Sun TV. "The Times of India" rated it 2 out of 5, saying that "Pichaikaran is not bad, but it's not good either". Sify said that ""Pichaikaran" is a valiant attempt by Mani Ratnam to venture into a genre he has never explored before and that he does a decent job. The first half is crisp and entertaining. The second half sags a bit despite the somewhat engaging climax." IANS gave it a rating of 3 out of 5. "Indiaglitz" wrote: "Once again Mani Ratnam has chosen a mass subject without any gloss at all. As usual, he has done it in an interesting way. The story is engaging and the screenplay is good. The movie leads are not great, but they make up for it by color and enthusiasm." The film received several nominations and won three awards at the 63rd Filmfare Awards South: Best Male Debut (Vikram), Best Male Debut (Keerthy Suresh) and Best Supporting Actor (Karthi).
